POLIS PARADE

Affected by the people’s awe toward the police, surely influenced by Gezi park episodes, but by the
large police deployments as well, it is not difficult to understand the daintiness of the social tension.
The artists wanted to play down going around the town with toy police cars: besides having made
out in front of a police condolences at Istiklal caddesi and in other parts of the city, these cars had
their celebration on a traditional brass dish typically used to eat the fish, at a grill in the district of Tarlabasi.
In the video you can see the cars moving disorganized, going and rear-ending the other, with
sirens mixed to the melody of the parades. The resulting situation is comical, basically because imaging
security forces on clumsy and disorganized situations helps to shorten the distance between
the ordinary citizen and the authorities. On the other hand, is far-fetched to think that people could
see in the security forces an ally, a friend, a citizen, especially during a demonstration. The majority
of people considers them as the representation of the strong powers of the State against which the
population manifests, and the police works to protect the interests of those strong powers, even if
this means violence and brutality against the citizen. It is curious how the term Polis is used internationally
to identify the Greek polis, which expected from free inhabitants the active participation of
the political life, in sharp contrast to the police state.
Colpiti dal timore reverenziale della gente nei confronti della polizia, complici i fatti di Gezi park, ma
anche dai grandi spiegamenti di polizia, non è difficile capire la delicatezza della tensione sociale.
Gli artisti hanno voluto sdrammatizzare andando in giro per la città con delle macchinine della polizia
giocattolo: oltre ad averle fatte sfilare davanti ad un cordoglio di polizia presso Istiklal caddesi
e in altri punti della città, queste macchinine hanno avuto la loro celebrazione su un tipico piatto
in ottone utilizzato tradizionalmente per mangiare il pesce, presso una griglieria nel quartiere di
Tarlabasi. Nei video si vedono le macchinine muoversi disorganizzate andando a sbattere l’una
contro l’altra, con le sirene mescolate alla melodia delle parate. La situazione che si crea è comica,
perchè immaginare le forze dell’ordine in situazioni maldestre e disorganizzate aiuta ad accorciare
la distanza tra il cittadino comune e le autorità. D’altronde, è inverosimile pensare che il popolo
veda nelle forze dell’ordine un alleato, un amico, un cittadino, specie durante una manifestazione.
La maggior parte ci vede la rappresentazione dei poteri forti dello Stato contro cui manifesta, e le
forze dell’ordine agiscono a tutela degli interessi di quei poteri forti, fino ad arrivare alle violenze e
brutalità contro il cittadino. E’ curioso come il termine Polis sia utilizzato a livello internazionale per
identificare la polis greca, che prevedeva l’attiva partecipazione degli abitanti liberi alla vita politica,
in netta contrapposizione allo stato di polizia.
