Studio Visit with AIDA
Artist and printer Aida invited us to her studio last month to take some photographs of her at work in her East London studio space to accompany an article about her work in the latest issue of independent publication Very Nearly Almost.
"Born in Iran, Aida arrived in the UK as a political refugee in the early 1980′s with her family and settled in London. Now from her base in Hackney Wick she produces fine art print editions for her avid audience. One of Aida’s recent campaigns, 'Print is Power' takes the form of free public screen printing workshops, most notably held at the Victoria & Albert Museum, which successfully demonstrate how, with the right design and message, traditional printmaking can allow anyone to make a large-scale social impact."
It's not the first time we have visited Aida in her studio, we caught up with her and the Hysteria ladies (Collagism and Shubby) back in March (covered here) as they were putting the finishing touches to their collaborative collage works for their group show Hsyteria, still on show at London's oldest patisserie Maison Bertaux until the 15th June.
On this occasion it was all about Aida and the new body of works she was preparing for her upcoming show at Bradbury and Blanchard gallery in Sheffield, set to opens on the 5th June 2014. Aida told us us she has been 'chained to her printing press' for the last few months testing images/colours and building up the multiple layers of the complex print pieces she plans to present at what is surprisingly her very first solo show titled 'HABROS'.
Often not leaving her studio for days on end she tells us, Aida took a short tea break on our visit to talk about the upcoming exhibition and showed us some of the new works before leaving us to get on with taking photos while she went back to work, jumping between rinsing newly exposed screens which she somehow seemed to expose while talking to us and prepping artwork for the next set of coated screens.
There was a great buzz in the studio, 80's music blasting out of the stereo and talking with Aida as well as seeing her at work, it was evident that she loves what she is doing and has a real passion for the craft of silkscreen printing. HABROS will see her exhibit a brand new body of prints and from the work in progress pieces we were lucky enough to see it's gonna be a stunning show. We might actually have to leave East London and venture north on a little trip to Sheffield to catch the finished collection in person!!
HABROS opens with a private view on the 5th June, 6.30 — 9pm and will be on show at B&B Gallery until the 29th June 2014.
