Earlier this evening we stopped by London's Grosvenor Gardens opposite Victoria Station where Lazarides Gallery and the Vienna Tourist Board were hosting the first part of a celebratory event in honour of the 150th birth anniversary of Viennese artist Gustav Klimt. The event has seen 9 international artists invited to create works of art inspired by Gustav Klimt.
A selection of the participating artists set up temporary studio like spaces on raised 3m x 3m plinths today and worked on their canvases live in front of the crowds stopping by throughout the day. We caught the last hour of the event and managed to catch Mode2, Lucy McLauchlan, Bastardilla, Know Hope, Marlene Hausseger and Christian Eisenberger at work as they were finishing up for the day. Other works on display included canvases from Vhils, Shepard Fairey and Ron English.
The second part of the celebration will see the completed works go on public display in an exhibition entitled ‘Klimt Illustrated’, which will open at Lazarides Rathbone Gallery space on the 24th August and will run until the 1st September, Tuesday through Saturday 11am to 7pm.
