Blacktronica Exhibition
Blacktronica: Redder Than Red + The Freshest Kids
Following a successful series of events as part of the recent bfi Blackworld project, the acclaimed club night takes up a long-term monthly residency at the NFT. Each month we'll be presenting films that relate to the Blacktronica theme, followed by some serious breaking action in the Film Café as the Blacktronica DJs deliver their unique blend of music without borders, from Carl Craig to Coltrane and everything in between.
Celebrated photographer Martha Cooper and writer Nika Kramer make their directorial debut with the story of Hanifa 'Queen' Hudson aka Bubbles, the pioneering female breakdancer who rose to fame in the early '80s with breakdance crew 'The B-Boys', via appearances on TV and in early Hip Hop films Electro Rock and Bombin. Widely acknowledged as the first female breaker to compete with men in the almost exclusively male emerging Hip Hop culture, Bubbles remains an inspiration to B-Girls all over the world. Plus The Freshest Kids. The first documentary to explore the history of hiphop's dance culture and its early pioneers. Known by many names - breaking, rocking, breakdancing - the style was born at DJ Kool Herc's South Bronx house parties in the early 70s, and evolved in recent years into its latest gravity-defying incarnation as a thriving underground movement.
