Diogo Machado's Azulejo Tiles in London

Add Fuel To The FireSome of you eagle eyed East London street art spotters out there may have recently seen clusters of square ceramic tiles appearing on the streets such as those pictured above. The tiles decorated in repeat pattern illustrations are the work of Portuguese artist and illustrator Diogo Machado aka add fuel to the fire.

The artist was in London last month for the 'Spaces Within' show at Pure Evil Gallery (Feb 16th to 26th 2012) and he decided "to take some little pieces of renewed portuguese tradition to the UK Streets". The short film below sees the artist at work installing the London pieces.

"In Portugal, the Azulejo tile is more than a mere decorative element of little intrinsic value. It has been an important medium for Portuguese artistic expression for more than five centuries."
